So, we’re underway at the 19th FIFA World Cup in South Africa. I’m writing following the 1-1 draw in the opening game between South Africa and Mexico and cannot wait for the rest of the tournament. I’ve been thinking of late about the players I want to watch at this year’s World Cup, and the players I think will shine. Looking at the teams who I believe will progress to the knockout rounds, and those who have been on form all season, I’ve come up with the following list.
My Top 5 Players To Watch During World Cup 2010
- Wesley Sneijder (Holland) – the player was inspirational in helping lead Inter Milan to the Champions League final. Not only that, but they won.
- Diego Forlan (Uruguay) – prolific over the last few years and on top form this year in the Europa League for Athletico Madrid.
- Wayne Rooney (England) – had a fantastic season for Man United until injury ruined what could have been the perfect finale. Will want to make amends for his sending off 4 years ago. Chance of golden boot.
- Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina) – 29 goals in 39 games for Real Madrid this season. If he can get in the team ahead of Tevez then he could be another contender for the golden boot.
- Lionel Messi (Argentina) – Undoubtably the best player in World football at the moment. I don’t think Argentina will reach the final, but Messi’s skill will be remembered for years after this World Cup has finished.
