Top 5 Players To Watch At South Africa’s World Cup 2010

Friday, June 11th, 2010

So, we’re underway at the 19th FIFA World Cup in South Africa. I’m writing following the 1-1 draw in the opening game between South Africa and Mexico and cannot wait for the rest of the tournament. I’ve been thinking of late about the players I want to watch at this year’s World Cup, and the players I think will shine. Looking at the teams who I believe will progress to the knockout rounds, and those who have been on form all season, I’ve come up with the following list.

My Top 5 Players To Watch During World Cup 2010

  1. Wesley Sneijder (Holland) – the player was inspirational in helping lead Inter Milan to the Champions League final. Not only that, but they won.
  2. Diego Forlan (Uruguay) – prolific over the last few years and on top form this year in the Europa League for Athletico Madrid.
  3. Wayne Rooney (England) – had a fantastic season for Man United until injury ruined what could have been the perfect finale. Will want to make amends for his sending off 4 years ago. Chance of golden boot.
  4. Gonzalo Higuain (Argentina) – 29 goals in 39 games for Real Madrid this season. If he can get in the team ahead of Tevez then he could be another contender for the golden boot.
  5. Lionel Messi (Argentina) – Undoubtably the best player in World football at the moment. I don’t think Argentina will reach the final, but Messi’s skill will be remembered for years after this World Cup has finished.
